SOME PRINCIPLES FOR BIBLE INTERPRETATION
It is sometimes difficult for modern readers to grasp the idea that Westerners think differently and read literature differently from how the ancient Hebrews did. How many times have we heard it said: The Bible says what it means and means what it says!”? I have had numerous people object, strenuously, to my insistence that we read the Bible through “Jewish” eyes, with an understanding of their culture, their world-view, their literature. I mean, after all, the Bible was written by “Jews” to Jews, about Jewish promises. 17 Does it not make sense to honor that context?
